Fred was born on April 6, 1935 in Dubuque, IA, the son of Elmer and Melita (Carney) May. He married the love of his life, Mary Jo Leibold, on November 28, 1957.

Fred attended Saint Patrick's School, Loras Academy and Loras College. He earned his degree in Dentistry from Marquette University and went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force. He played basketball at Loras, leading all Division III colleges in free throw percentage his junior year.

Fred was a member of the American Dental Association, the Iowa Dental Association and Dubuque District Dental Society from 1963 to 1997. Loved by his patients and staff alike, he was awarded the Dubuque District Dental Association sponsored event "Boss of the Year" in 1975. He was an accomplished dentist for 35 years and his practice was continued by his son Dr. William F. May and granddaughters Dr. Lindsey Eddy and Dr. Emily McGuire. They continue to incorporate Fred's firm belief in their practice which is, "People don't care how much you know, but they know how much you care."

Following his retirement from dentistry he was able to dedicate the remainder of his days to the love of the land with the love of his life, Mary Jo. He spent many winter months in Corpus Christi, TX. He enjoyed attending children/grandchildren sports and recreational activities, golfing, country dancing, harvesting on the farm, and was an ongoing fixture at Farmers Market.

Fred was a big believer in leaving everything better than when he found it. He was a master arborist and a good steward of the land. He planted over 70,000 trees, contour stripped the land and converted to organic farming. He rarely left a card game of "Solo" or "Euchre" without some coins in his pocket.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Mary Jo, brother, Dr. Elmer C. (Sandy) May.  Children, Dr. William (Karen) May, Robert (Crystal) May, Terence May, Douglas (Michele) May, Brian (Amy) May, and Gregory (Ann) May. Grandchildren, Dr. Lindsey (Kelen) Eddy, Dr. Emily (Scott) McGuire, Stephanie (Jeff) Ludovissy, Dr. Meghan (Jacob) Wendland, Eric (Emily) May, Jacob May, Morgan (Jared) McGovern, Derek May, Mackenzie May, Victoria May, Elizabeth May, Caroline May, Patrick May, Grace May, Christian May, Dominic May, Alex Breen, Emily May, and Cameron May.  Great Grand Children, Jackson, Brooklyn, Franny and Grace McGuire, Jordyn, Taylor, and Brady Ludovissy.

Fred was preceded in death by parents Elmer and Melita (Carney) May, Sisters, Mary Patterson, Melita Kunnert, and Alberta Taylor.

We would like to thank Dr. Brian Sullivan and the medical staff at Mercy Hospital for their compassion and professional comfort care. We would also like to thank the families and caregivers that provided unlimited support to Fred and Mary Jo through the years.

A memorial fund has been established in Fred's memory.
